I chose to try fly fishing of my own accord. I don’t have any friends or family that do it. A few of them do regular spin fishing but that’s about it. So it was totally up to me to figure out on my own how to go about it. It’s more difficult to learn, so I was equally excited and nervous to try it out.
I didn’t want to buy a fly fishing rod right up front without having any idea if I’d like it. Clearly there was no one I could just give it to as a gift either. I suppose I could sell it, but I didn’t really want to be bothered with the logistics of that. So I figured it was better to be safe than sorry and rent the big stuff. At least for now, anyway.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was really going to like this activity. I realized it was well worth the investment of money and time. To begin, I was going to take it slowly. For now, this was just about getting the basics of everything.
A coworker of mine suggested looking into Trouts Fly Fishing, not only because of the quality of products but also because of the loads of information that they have available on their website. It was a great place for me to learn a lot about fly fishing on my own time.
I bought some of the smaller things that I couldn’t rent, including my trout flies. Since I was new to this sport, I wasn’t sure if I’d like wet or dry flies better. I figured their staff picks would probably be a good place to start, since these people tend to know what they’re doing.
I ultimately decided to do half of the euro nymphs and half dry flies to give them both a fair shot. They make it so that you can place a whole order but do half of each. It makes it so much easier than deciding on one kind.
Of course, it turned out that I loved fly fishing, and it didn’t take much for me to actually commit to it. I ended up buying all of my major fishing gear from Trouts Fly Fishing, mainly because of the great experience I had with purchasing my smaller stuff from them.
